Satellite Desalination Plants Along West Coast

The projects are desalination plants for saline water through pipes connected directly from the sea through the structures of the tanks that were set up to carry out the purification process. Satellite desalination plants along West Coast is 1.4 billion SR .The Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) has created Satellite plants for 8 cities located on the west coast of Saudi Arabia. The plants are designed for drinking water production using the sea water reverse osmosis technology. The sea water will be utilized to produce clean water. The reject brine water and waste water regenerated within the plant will be discharged back to sea in compliance with local environmental standards. Satellite desalination plants along West Coast is divided into 8 plants: Alaith, Alqunfuthah, Alshuqiq, Farasan, Haqel, Duba Alwajh & Umluj with total production capacity 238,000 cum/day.

Building Roots’ scope was Three Plants Turnkey Projects. – Alaith plant was built with an area of 32,000 sqm and with total concrete quantity 16,252 cum. – Umluj plant was built with an area of 20,000 sqm and total concrete quantity 14,623 cum. – Alwajh plant was built with an area of 20,000 sqm and total concrete quantity 13,088 cum. One of the most important tanks is the gravity filter tank which consist of a concrete tank ,provided with filtration media inside for retention of suspended solids. The filtration media is supported by an underdrain system from the bottom. The underdrain system is especially designed for proper distribution of backwash water and air during backwash operations. The gravity tank was built with an area of 1418 sqm divided into 8 tanks with 16 cells. The completion of the work in the required time was a great challenge to achieve ,despite the difficulties we faced during the implementation of the project such as the Corona virus and the curfew in addition to the presence of old plant’s pre-existing underground utility cables.
